IPv4 foundations — tutor guide
Example three-session pack. Adapt goals and level to the actual learners before delivery.
Learning goals
Distinguish a host address from its network. Calculate broadcast, mask, usable host range and usable host count.
Suggested 30-minute session
- 5 minutes: model the prefix and block size using one worked example.
- 12 minutes: individual practice through the assignment link or worksheet.
- 8 minutes: compare the method, not only the result.
- 5 minutes: retry the most common mistake on a fresh address.
Marking rubric
One point for each of six values. Four problems = 24 points. Suggested formative bands: 20–24, progress; 14–19, targeted correction; 0–13, revisit prefix and block boundaries. These are teaching suggestions, not validated assessment standards.
Common misconceptions
- Host address used as network: locate the containing block.
- Broadcast used as last host: subtract one address.
- Host count includes reserved addresses: distinguish total from usable.
- Mask changed in the wrong octet: split prefix into complete octets plus remaining bits.
